St. George comes to Masefield

13 April 2015

The Worshipful Master Joe and Loretta

The 900th Regular Meeting of Masefield Lodge welcomed 64 guests, to celebrate (albeit a little early) St George’s Night. With the Lodge business completed the members assembled to meet their guests in No 1 Dining Room (Kings Heath). The tables were dressed in red and white and decorated with flags of St. George who is not just the patron saint of England, as our Worshipful Master duly explained in a short address towards the end of the meal.

St George was a brave Roman soldier who protested against the Romans' torture of Christians and died for his beliefs. The popularity of St George in England stems from the time of the early Crusades when it is said that the Normans saw him in a vision and were victorious.

As well as being the patron saint of England, other countries that celebrate St George's Day include: Canada, Croatia, Portugal, Cyprus, Greece, Russia, Georgia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the Republic of Macedonia.

He is the patron saint of soldiers, archers, cavalry, chivalry, riders, saddlers, farmers and field workers as well as people with leprosy, the plague and syphilis. George is also the patron saint of Scouting as he "was typical of what a scout should be".

Armed with this fascinating information we concluded our Festive Board, which was followed by enthusiastic renditions of the National Anthem, Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory, and Jerusalem. The evening was rounded off with hilarious entertainment supplied in inimitable Black Country style by “Dandy”. All considered it was a great evening which no doubt will be repeated again next year.
