Ever considered becoming a Freemason?

We hope that this news page will help show the breadth and diversity of our Masonic activities (mostly charitable, sometimes purely social, always enjoyable) and that this will encourage potential future members to come forward to find out more.

There are many ways of doing this, and the "Your Questions Answered" page in this website is a good place to start. The next step is then to make contact with one or more Masons ~ if you have a friend, colleague or neighbour who is a Mason, you should feel free to raise the subject with him. You will generally find that any Mason will be happy to talk with you, and to put you in touch with a Lodge Secretary. If you have no existing Masonic acquaintances, by all means contact us by e-mail, giving us a few details about yourself and why you are interested in joining.

Masefield Lodge meets seven times each year, on the second Monday of the month from October to April inclusive. Each month's meeting begins usually at about 6 p.m., when the Lodge is opened, minutes of the previous meeting are read, followed by the general business of the Lodge, concluding at around 7.45 p.m. This is followed by a Festive Board in the Dining Room, where we enjoy good food and interesting conversation amongst Masonic company. These meetings are open to Brethren of the Lodge, and their invited Masonic guests. The Lodge calendar is further enhanced by our numerous social events, to which Brethren are encouraged to invite their partners, family and friends. Over the years, Masefield Lodge has enjoyed a wide variety of activities, including:

Our Contribution To Charity

From its earliest days, Freemasonry has been concerned with the care of orphans, the sick and the aged. This work continues today. In addition, large sums are given to national and local charities. Masonic charity is exercised at every level; individual Lodges make gifts and give aid to their own local communities and every Province also gives large sums of money to regional causes. Nationally, our efforts are channeled through four main charity organisations, they are:

  • The Grand Charity
  • The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys
  • The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution
  • Masonic Samaritan Fund

At a more local level, Masefield Lodge makes donations to organisations such as St. Mary's Hospice, Macmillan Nurses, Meningitis Research, Cancer Research. It should also be noted that donations are always Strictly Charitable, e.g. donations are never given to political parties or pressure groups.

Details of this event have been covered in full at both Regular Lodge Meetings and Officers Meetings. One of the main methods of collecting funds is by Gift Aid. The Province actively encourages all eligible donors to complete a Gift Aid declaration, which enables the benefit of your donation to be maximised.
For your donations to qualify for Gift Aid you must pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax at least equal to the tax that the Trust reclaims on your donations in the appropriate tax year (currently 28p for each £1 you give) work.

Social Calendar - to end August 2009

Masefield Golf Day Tuesday 11th August 2009
This year's event was a great success, and the Masefield Cup was won by W.Bro. Mike Bunn. As this year's winner, Mike has the honour of organising next year's event, and he has confirmed that it will once again be held at Kings Norton Golf Club. More details here.

The club is set in the Worcestershire countryside at 'Weatheroak' - 7 miles from the centre of Birmingham, one mile from junction 3 of the M42 and within easy each of the National Exhibition Centre and Birmingham Airport.

Please don't forget, you don't have to be a low handicapper to play. If your game (or clubs) are a bit rusty, we would still love to see you there. And, even if you don't play at all, do come and join us for an excellent meal in the evening.

Burns' Night Celebration - 2009
Burns' Night 2009
As always, the Burns' Night celebrations drew large numbers, with haggis, neeps and tatties, comedy and bagpipes. It's always a night to remember - not least due to our flamboyant table-dancing piper.

As this Social Event is held on our Regular Meeting Night we never manage to coincide with the actual date of the 25th of January.

125th Anniversary of the Lodge

125th AnniversaryThe Masefield Lodge was consecrated at the Moseley and Balsall Heath Institute on 6th May 1884. The Lodge met and celebrated its 125th Anniversary on Wednesday the 8th April (this being the closest date to the actual anniversary).
Forty-four Brethren attended to witness the Ceremony of Passing, after which a group photo was taken of all the visitors. This will be included in the latest version of the updated History, produced specially to commemorate this mile stone event.

The night proved to be a success both in the Lodge and at the Festive Board, where further celebrations were announced by the Worshipful Master, who informed the Brethren that a social event was to be held at Kings Norton Golf Club on 17th May to further mark the progress of this prestigious Lodge.

At the same time, at this popular venue we shall also hold our Traditional Salmon Lunch, always a great favourite social meeting. We all look forward to welcoming our ladies, family and friends to join us at this truly historic occasion, not to be missed. Full copies of the Lodge History and/or photos from the evening will be provided on receipt of order.

Moseley Lodge of Instruction

The Lodge meets on most Fridays from September to Mid-May. It is open to E.A.'s F.c.'s M.m.'s, Masters and Past Master's from all Provinces. Our declared aim is to supplement the work of private Lodges of Instruction and Rehearsal by providing an informal and convivial atmosphere where every aspect of the ritual work of all the Offices can be both practised and discussed in the wider context. Treasurer's Column

Have you returned an up to date Gift Aid form? The Treasurer and Charity Steward are keen to promote this, in order to maximise the charitable contributions from the Lodge members. The Charity Steward will be working hard to promote Gift Aid: he will request every member of the Lodge who pays UK tax to sign a Gift Aid form. Signing this form ensures that every penny a Brother donates over the next five years will qualify for the tax rebate. Making your Gift Aided donation could not be easier, as you can pay by monthly standing order or make irregular donations to suit you.
